Field Campaign, Atlantic Basins, Morocco

A GeoResources team has started an extended field campaign in southern Morocco, together with exploration geologists from the Office National des Hydrocarbures et des Mines (ONHYM), Rabat.

Both Paleozoic source and Meso-/Cenozoic sink areas will be visited. Outcrop studies will be focused on sequence stratigraphy and thermochronology.

Scientists from the RWTH Aachen, who will analyse source rock intervals in the Paleozoic and Mesozoic part of the basin fill have also joined the team.

The field campaign is part of a three-year, multidisciplinary R&D study between RWE Dea AG, Hamburg, ONHYM and GeoResources on the hydrocarbon potential of Atlantic Basins in southern Morocco.

Stadtwerke Heidelberg Gmbh (SWH), GeoThermal Energy GmbH (GeoT) and Deutsche Montan Technologie GmbH & Co. KG (DMT) and GeoResources have agreed to a joint research project focused on a high-resolution seismostratigraphic and structural model of the Upper Rhine Graben in the area of Heidelberg.

The project will include seismic and well log interpretation. Subsurface data will be integrated with outcrop data in the eastern vicinity of Heidelberg.

The presentation "Sedimentary basin analysis and nuemrical modeling, Paleozoic, southern Algeria" will be given by R. Z�hlke at 12:00 h in the Large Conference Hall. Coauthors are E. Lewandowski, T. Bechst�dt (all GeoResources), M. B�ckmann, V. Lampart, T. Leyth�user, V. Sauerland and B. Wirth (all RWE Dea AG, Hamburg).

The presentation "Palynology of the uppermost Silurian to Middle Devonian from two wells in southern Algeria" will be given by H. J�ger at 12:30 in the Large Conference Hall. Coauthor is V. Lampart (RWE Dea AG, Hamburg).

On May 12th 2009, GeoResources deputy director Dr. Rainer Z�hlke will speak at the "Plate Reconstruction and Play Concepts Workshop" in Halifax, Canada. The workshop, which will take place between May 11-13, is sponsored by the Offshore Energy Technical Research (OETR) Association and RPS Energy .

Topic of the talk will be basin analysis and numerical modeling of the northwest African Central Atlantic continental margin and sequence stratigraphy of the Triassic to recent basin fill.

OETR is a non-profit association dedicated to fostering geoscience research that will
enhance petroleum exploration and development in offshore Nova Scotia. The
Association works in partnership with the Nova Scotia Department of Energy, Dalhousie
University and Saint Mary�s University. Twenty experts from industry and university will take part in the workshop.

Between July 12th and August 6th, GeoResources� members Thilo Bechst�dt and Maria Boni will lead the Namex Field Trip to Namibia. Key topics are Infra-Cambrian source rocks, mineral ores and Proterozoic to Mesozoic basin development.

The field trip is held together with the Institute of Earth Sciences, University of Heidelberg and the University of Namibia (UNAM).

IHS CERA releases World Oil Watch report

On September 8th, IHS Cambridge Energy Research Associates (CERA) have released their new quarterly World Oil Watch report. According to the report, major exploration activity in the first half of 2009 has already increased global oil reserves for more than 10 BBO. If the current pace of discoveries continues for the second half of 2009, global reserves will reach their highest level since 2000.

World oil demand is predicted to grow for the first time since 2007 and may reach pre-recession levels by 2012. Emerging markets will be the chief drivers for the predicted growth in demand.

MSc Torben Kissen and MSc Ewa Lewandwoski will present the GeoResources�proposal for the "Sobrarbe Reservoir (SobraRes) Project - Ainsa Basin, Pyrenees Foreland Basin".

The project aims to improve the understanding of reservoir quality, heterogeneities and fluid-flow behaviour in foreland basin delta systems by high-resolution sedimentological, petrophysical and architectural outcrop models.

GeoResources members will attend the �Geothermiekongress 2009� of the Geothermische Vereinigung e.V. / Bundesverband Geothermie from 17-19.11.2009 in Bochum/Germany.

MSc Axel Wenke will give an oral presentation about a Pre-Feasibility Study for a geothermal field in the Northern Upper Rhine Valley. The study has been carried out in cooperation between GeoThermal Engineering GmbH (Karlsruhe), �berlandwerk Gro�-Gerau Gmb, GeoResources and the Institute of Earth Sciences at Heidelberg University. The study evaluates a Permian low-enthalpic geothermal reservoir based on vintage 2D seismic and well data.

As part of the same study, GeoResources member Lennart Rohrer will give the presentation "Untersuchung der Permischen Reservoirs im N�rdlichen Oberrheingraben". It includes results of 2D seismic interpretation in the Northern Upper Rhine Valley and outcrop-analogue studies in the Saar-Nahe-Basin.

GeoResources member Christian Lorson will give the presentation "Erste Ergebnisse einer 2D-seismischen Erkundung im Raum Heidelberg" with first results from a seismic campaign which was shot in April in the Heidelberg city limits. Main objective is the first geothermal evaluation of the lower Mesozoic low-enthalpic reservoirs in the area. The study has been carried out in cooperation between GeoThermal Engineering GmbH, DMT GmbH & Co KG, Stadtwerke Heidelberg�Netze GmbH, GeoResources and the Institute of Earth Sciences at Heidelberg University.

GeoResources�director Prof. Dr. Bechst�dt has been appointed Professor for Petroleum Geology at the Jagiellonian University, Krakow, Poland. At the same time, he has retired from the Chair of Sedimentary Geology at the University of Heidelberg, Germany, where he is currently Professor emeritus.

Prof. Dr. Bechst�dt will retain his responsibilities as director of GeoResources sharing his time between Heidelberg and Krakow.

Maria Boni appointed member of the Board of Trustees of the BGR, Hannover

GeoResources� senior staff Prof. Dr. Maria Boni has been appointed Member of the Board of Trustees of the Federal Institute for Geosciences and Natural Resources (BGR, Hannover) by the German Federal Secretary of Economic Affairs, Rainer Br�derle.

The BGR is the largest geoscientific institution in Germany. The Board of Trustees counsels the directorate of the BGR and the German Federal Secretary of Economic Affairs with respect to the operations and the future development of the BGR. Counseling covers all scientific, technical and economic operations of the BGR including internal organisation and human resources management.

Special focus is on:
1) the BGR�s national and international mission of securing Germany�s supply of georesources and of environmental protection;
2) medium- and long-term strategies of the BGR, including financial planning;
3) major changes in the internal organisation, including human resources management, by the directorate of the BGR.

The appointment has been made for the forthcoming term of the Board of Trustees, starting on June 1 2010, and lasts for five years.

GeoResources� senior staff Dr. Hartmut J�ger has been appointed secretary of the CIMP Spore-Pollen Subcommission in September 2009 at the general meeting of the International Commission of Palaeozoic Palynology (CIMP) in Warsaw. The appointment will last for the next term of four years.

The Commission Internationale de Microflore du Pal�ozoique (C.I.M.P.) is an
international federation of palynologists interested in Palaeozoic palynology.
The commission aims to advance knowledge in palynology and related subjects by
the promotion of international co-operation and meetings between scientists of
all regions and countries. Therefore the C.I.M.P. arranges symposia and
working groups, dealing with various stratigraphical and taxonomic problems in
Palaeozoic palynology.

Axel Wenke, Rainer Z�hlke (both GeoResources, Univ. of Heidelberg), Haddou Jabour (OMHYM) and Oliver Kluth (RWE Dea AG) have published the paper "High‐resolution sequence stratigraphy in basin reconnaissance: example from the Tarfaya Basin, Morocco" in First Break (European Association of Geoscientists and Engineers), vol. 29, November 2011.

The paper shows the role and advanced techniques of quantitative high-resolution sequence stratigraphy in basin reconnaissance, e.g. at an early stage of new venture exploration. It forms part of the results from the Atlantic Margin Project (AMP), a joint collaboration between RWE Dea AG, ONHYM, GeoResources and the Universities of Heidelberg, Aachen and Kiel.

GeoResources and Univ. of Heidelberg would like to thank ONHYM, Rabat, and RWE Dea AG, Hamburg, who have provided the seismic and well data and have given permission to publish this paper. The paper is derived from the PhD project of the Axel Wenke at the University of Heidelberg, which has been supported by RWE Dea AG.

BMU project granted to R. Z�hlke and T. Bechst�dt: Characterization and Numerical Modeling of Geothermal Reservoirs

The German Federal Ministery for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety (BMU, Berlin) has granted GeoResources�directors Rainer Z�hlke and Thilo Bechst�dt a three-year research project: "Characterization and numerical modeling of structural and sedimentary geothermal reservoirs".

The project includes two parts, with part I focused on facies, seismic calibration & prediction and Part II on diagenetic analysis. The main rationale is to adapt and further develop existing techniques applied in hydrocarbon exploration for future geothermal exploration. The research area is located in the Upper Rhine Graben, Germany.

Key approaches include terrestrial LIDAR scanning and spectral Gamma Ray logging in outcrops, reservoir modeling of outcrop analogues and subsurface reservoirs as well as PSDM seismic simulation. Diagenetic analyses are based on petrographic microscopy including cold and hot cathodoluminescence, Xray diffractometry, isotope geochemistry and microthermometry.

Both projects are part of the research program AuGE - "Outcrop-reservoir analogue studies and their application to geothermal exploration". Cooperating organisations and companies include the Universities of Heidelberg, Erlangen and G�ttingen, GeoThermal Engineering GmbH (Karlsruhe) and GeoEnergy GmbH (Karlsruhe).

AuGE has been initiated and is coordinated by Geothermal Engineering GmbH (Dipl.-Geol. A. Wenke). The research group includes more than 20 scientists covering sedimentary geology, structural geology, reservoir analysis, hydrocarbon and geothermal exploration. All results from AuGE will be published in international peer-reviewed magazines.

Three PhD students are conducting research at the University of Heidelberg supervised by Rainer Z�hlke and Thilo Bechst�dt. The project is located at the Institute of Geosciences.

GeoResources receives contract from E.ON Ruhrgas Algeria

GeoResources has recently received a contract from E.ON Ruhrgas E&P Algeria GmbH for source rock characterisation in its Rhourde Yacoub concession in eastern Algeria. The project will focus on palynostratigraphy, organic maturation analysis and source rock potential assessment.

It adds to the large record of projects in reservoir & source rock characterisation, basin & HC systems analysis and nuemrical modeling, which Georesources has performed in North Africa over the last years for various clients.

GeoResources�director, Thilo Bechst�dt, has been awarded the Hans-Stille-Medal of the German Geoscience Society (DGG).

The Hans-Stille-Medal (donated in 1948) is the most prestigious award of the German Geoscience Society for outstanding lifetime achievements in geosciences. The medal will be presented to Thilo Bechst�dt on the Annual Meeting of the DGG in Hannover, on October 2nd (GeoHannover 2012).

It is presented in the session "Accumulation of Muddy Sediments - Sedimentology of Fine-Grained Rocks" on Tuesday, May 15th, 9:30-9:50 h.

Also a poster presentation will be given on "Hydrocarbon Source Rock Potential of Lower to Middle Jurassic Black Shales in Southern Germany" by Hartmut J�ger. The poster will be on display during the three days of the conference. It is focussed on optical methods for source rock characterization of different black shale units in the lower to middle Jurassic in Southern Germany.
